Daejeon Metropolitan City got a new mayor. Mr. Hong-chul Yum of Liberty Forward Party was inaugurated as the new mayor of Daejeon Metropolitan City on July 1, 2010.
Born in Nonsan, Chungcheong province, Mayor Yum studied Political Science and Diplomacy at Gyeonghee University and obtained a doctor’s degree in Political Science from Jung-Ang University. After serving as a Kyungnam University professor(1971~1988) and presidential secretary for political affairs(1988~1993), he was appointed the mayor of Daejeon City in 1993. While in office, he held a successful Daejeon EXPO in 1993. He was the President of Korea Airports Corporation (1996~1998) and served as the President of Hanbat National University (2000~2002). He was the 8th Mayor of Daejeon City (2002~2006).

He became well-known when he, as a professor, published a book titled “The third world and the theory of dependence” which was widely-read by students in the 1980s. In November last year he made a formal debut as a poet by releasing a collection of poems titled “One step after another” During his publication party, he showed off his saxophone playing, too.

Mayor Yum revealed his strong future ambition of creating Daejeon as a new hub of Korea by putting the top priority on reviving the local economy.
