Mayors from 22 cities in 10 countries gathered together in June of 1997 in Daejeon, and
unanimously adopted the WTA statutes defining the main philosophies and guiding
directions of the WTA. They also signed a joint statement expressing their unwavering
resolution to support the development of the WTA. From this meeting, the WTA came
into existence.
At the inaugural WTA General Assembly, which was held in September 1998 in Daejeon, not only the representatives
of WTA member cities, but also new member cities and IASP (International Association of Science Parks) joined to
discuss specific exchanges and development plans among science cities. An international symposium was also held
in the fields of high technologies and advanced science during the assembly.

After this assembly, the WTA stepped forward as an international organization with 23 member cities from 10 countries.

Its General Assembly, University Presidents Forum, Techno-Mart, international joint research, establishment of an
information network on scientific technology, and support for science park development in developing countries have actively
been promoted. In only 10 years since its establishment, the WTA has grown as an international organization with 80 members from 40 countries as of 2011.
